I finally solved this problem by removing all the virtualbox packages, closing the VM, updating the host VirtualBox in Windows to the latest version, then installing the guest additions from the local host "disk" from the virtualbox menu. It could be added to boot.local in /etc/init.d for instance. Seems like you need one more command to add a mount command.

I have had no problems using the same shared folders in a Linux Mint 15 VM, and am really stumped as to what to do to fix this. This is why I say they are "stuck" since they can't be unmounted. Trying to add and remove the root user to and from the vboxsf group did nothing to help and when I tried to remove the shared folders via the Virtualbox interface (even having shut down the OpenSUSE VM) they still appear in /media.

When I logged back into OpenSUSE the folders I set appeared in /media (both in Dolphin and in the CLI) as expected, however if opened in Dolphin they appear empty (even with hidden folders and files visible), and when I check their properties in Dolphin it freezes the program, whereas if I check with ls in the CLI it simply hangs trying to process the command. I properly added my user to the vboxsf group, and restarted, then added the shared folders I wanted through the VirtualBox GUI in Windows.
